Dubai: Due to a broken hand, New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Devon Conway was ruled out of the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2021 and the accompanying tour of India. Conway suffered the injury against England in the semi-final. Conway whacked his own bat after being disqualified, and scans today revealed that he had broken his fifth metacarpal in his right hand. This is New Zealand's second injury setback in the tournament, following Lockie Ferguson's calf tear that forced him out of their Super 12 opener against Pakistan.

"He is devastated to be ruled out at this point in time." "Devon is so enthusiastic about playing for the Black Caps, and no one is sadder than he is right now - so we are really trying to rally around him," said Gary Stead, New Zealand's head coach. "On the field, it appeared to be a fairly innocuous reactionary incident, but the blow clearly struck the bat between the glove padding, and while it was not the brightest thing he is done, there is definitely an element of bad luck in the damage." Conway's replacement will not be sought by New Zealand.

"We will not be bringing in a replacement player for this World Cup or next week's T20 series against India because to schedules," the coach stated. "However, we are working through our alternatives for the Test series later this month."
