Next Chief Justice of India: Justice NV Ramana is appointed by the President

President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed the senior-most Supreme Court judge NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice Of India.

Justice Ramana is set to take the oath of office of CJI on April 24. He will be the 48th Chief Justice Of India.

Justice Ramana was appointed as judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014, and will be retiring on August 26, 2022. He hails from the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. He was enrolled as an Advocate on February 10, 1983, and started practice in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.

He was born in an agricultural family on August 27, 1957 in Ponnavaram Village, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. He enrolled as an Advocate on February 10, 1983 and practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals and the Supreme Court of India in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Labour, Service and Election matters.

He has also functioned as Additional Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh. He functioned as Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013 to May 20, 2013.
