In a case related to INS Viraat, the Supreme Court has indicated that the ban on breaking the warship INS Viraat has been lifted. The Supreme Court had announced a stay on the demolition of the historic vessel after retiring from the Navy in February 2017. The court has asked the Mumbai-based company to focus on its supervision report. The next hearing in the case will now be held after a week.

INS Viraat has been on the beach at the ship-breaking yard in Alang since September 2020. Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde said the ship is now private property and 40 percent of which has already been demolished. Therefore, this ship cannot now be given the status of an aircraft carrier. The Mumbai company that bought the ship had also argued that 40 percent of the ship had been broken. Earlier, the court has also issued a notice on February 10 to the Mumbai-based company that bought the historic warship INS Viraat, restraining it from breaking it.

'INS Viraat' joined the Navy in 1987: A petition was filed in the Supreme Court. The petitioner had said that it was better to demolish the vessel than to be converted into a museum. The petitioner had expressed his desire to preserve the vessel. The company had deposited an amount of Rs.100 crores to buy. While a Mumbai firm bought it for scrap. The aircraft carrier Viraat was inducted into the Indian Navy in 1987. The man-of-war was removed from the Navy in 2017.
