UNITED STATES: President Joe Biden well ahead of Trump-inauguration, announced on Monday that the next two Ford-class aircraft carriers will be named after William J. Clinton and George W. Bush. This marks a tribute to the 42nd and 43rd presidents of the United States, acknowledging their contributions and leadership during their time in office.
Clinton, a Democrat, served as president from 1993 to 2001, while Bush, a Republican, led the nation from 2001 to 2009. The announcement, made during Biden’s final week in office, reflects the bipartisan respect for their legacies.
The two carriers, to be named USS William J. Clinton (CVN-82) and USS George W. Bush (CVN-83), are still in the early stages of planning. Construction is expected to begin in the coming years, with delivery timelines yet to be finalized. These state-of-the-art nuclear-powered vessels will eventually join the U.S. Navy’s elite fleet, further strengthening its global capabilities.
President Biden shared his thoughts on the decision, saying, “I am soproud to announce, the next Gerald RFord-class nuclear-powered aircraft to be named for 2 Ex-presidents, Bill Clinton & George Bush. Each knows the weight of being commander-in-chief and understands the sacrifices of our military families.”
Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, who selected the names, highlighted the historical significance of this decision. "These carriers will serve as a tribute to two leaders who dedicated their lives to the service of our nation," Del Toro said.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also emphasized the pivotal role of aircraft carriers in U.S. naval operations. “These vessels ensure we project power and deliver combat capability anytime and anywhere, safeguarding our democracy,” he said.
Austin added that the future USS William J. Clinton and USS George W. Bush would inspire future generations while standing as enduring symbols of their namesakes’ legacies.
The naming of these aircraft carriers is part of a broader initiative to expand and modernize the U.S. Navy. In recent weeks, several other vessels have also been named, including guided-missile destroyers, amphibious warships, and expeditionary medical ships.
With these advancements, the U.S. Navy continues to uphold its reputation as the world’s most capable and professional maritime force, ensuring national security and global stability.
