Father, Congress MLA, daughter-in-law, member of terrorist organization ISIS, arrested by NIA

Bangalore: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted a raid in Karnataka on Monday (January 3, 2022) and arrested Deepti alias Maryam. She is the daughter-in-law of B M Basha and the wife of Abdul Rahman. Basha is the son of famous Kannada writer BM Idinaba, who is MLA from the Congress. His daughter-in-law Maryam has been detained for alleged relationship with terror outfit ISIS. She lives in Mastikatte village near Mangaluru.

A team led by NIA deputy SP Krishna Kumar searched his house. The security agency received several documents during this period. NIA remanded Maryam from a local court in Mangaluru and took her to New Delhi for questioning. NIA said in a statement that the agency in collaboration with Karnataka Police has nabbed an ISIS operative Deepti Marla alias Maryam. It may be recalled that NIA had raided the house in August as well and arrested Rahman's cousin Ammar on charges of alleged ISIS link. NIA had questioned Mary at that time but did not arrest her. Media reports suggest that he has been arrested by the agency after collecting enough evidence in the last five months.

Media reports quoted a senior Karnataka Police official as saying, 'Mariam alias Deepti Marla was in touch with ISIS member Ajmala. She is the wife of Idinaba's grandson. Ajmala fled to Syria a few years ago and is believed to have become a staunch member of ISIS. She told that before marriage, Maryam was a Hindu. She is from an affluent family. She studied in UAE. There she was attracted to Islam. After that, she converted to religion and got married. The NIA said that 'During the investigation, it has been learned that during the fall of the terrorist organization ISIS in Syria/Iraq, Deepti Marla and Mohammad Amin had also gone to Kashmir to support ISIS in January and March 2020.'
