Kolkata: The West Bengal assembly elections are going on and in the meantime, a lot is happening which is surprising. Amidst all this, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken major action in the state and arrested Trinamool Congress leader Chhatradhar Mahato. Some media reports assume that Mahato's arrest is linked to the killing of CPI (M) leader Prabir Mahato in the year 2009.

The most important thing is that the Maoist Mahato had ever taken over the TMC last year. Thereafter, the ruling TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had come to the target of the opposition. Some media reports also say that Mahato has been arrested under the Non-full Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). There are reports that they can be produced in the court today. Well, TMC leaders have been arrested earlier also. In fact, he was released after being imprisoned for 10 years last year, and then the TMC had inducted him.

Last Thursday, the Calcutta High Court had ordered Mahato to appear before the NIA office. In fact, NIA had sought a custody inquiry before the court and the Division Bench of Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Arijit Banerjee had said that the accused had been asked to appear at the Salt Lake Office on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week at 11 am.
