Patna: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Patna has handed down a five-year rigorous imprisonment to the main accused, Rasiuddin, in connection with a 2015 fake currency case in Bihar's East Champaran. In addition to the prison term, Rasiuddin has been ordered to pay fines for multiple charges. The convict was charged under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the NIA press release, Rasiuddin, a resident of Mohanpur village in West Bengal's Malda district, is the fifth individual convicted in this fake currency notes case. The case came to light when high-quality Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) with a face value of Rs. 5,94,000 were recovered from another accused, Afroz Ansari, who was transporting them to the Indo-Nepal border area for distribution in Nepal. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Patna, initially filed a complaint about the incident on September 19, 2015. Subsequently, the NIA took over the investigation and re-registered the case on December 23, 2015.

Over the past eight years, eight accused individuals were arrested and charged in connection with the case on various dates: July 22, 2016, April 17, 2017, March 19, 2019, and July 5, 2023. Among them, four individuals were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment on October 11, 2018. Their trial proceedings concluded, while proceedings against the remaining three accused are ongoing. The sentences against Rasiuddin and the earlier convicts will run concurrently, according to the NIA.
