New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, a leader from the Congress party, faced criticism from security expert Lt General (Retd) Sanjay Kulkarni for his recent statement suggesting that India has lost its land to China. Kulkarni emphasized that such statements should not be made while diplomatic talks are ongoing. Rahul Gandhi had earlier criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claim that no Indian land was taken by China's People Liberation Army (PLA) troops in Ladakh. He cited local accounts contending that Chinese troops intruded upon Indian territory. Kulkarni highlighted that since 1950, India has lost about 40,000 square km to China, but making such statements during negotiations is unhelpful.

Rahul Gandhi's statement came during his visit to Ladakh to pay tribute to his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, on his 79th birth anniversary. Rahul Gandhi expressed concerns about China taking Indian land, contrary to the Prime Minister's assertion. He mentioned that the locals in the region reported the incursion of Chinese troops onto their grazing land. Kulkarni urged caution against making such statements, stating that the ongoing talks are primarily focused on friction points like Demchok and Depsang, where patrolling is restricted. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic negotiations and avoiding rhetoric that could undermine the negotiations.

Rahul Gandhi's comments followed the 19th round of military dialogue between the Indian Army and the Chinese PLA to ease tensions in the Ladakh sector. Despite several rounds of disengagement, both armies still maintain a significant presence along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). During his visit, Rahul Gandhi also raised concerns about the Union territory status granted to Ladakh after the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the dissatisfaction of the locals with their representation and unemployment concerns.

Recalling a conversation with his father about Pangong Tso, Rahul Gandhi expressed his admiration for the region's beauty. He mentioned his intention to visit Nubra Valley and Kargil as part of his trip. Accompanied by party officials, Rahul Gandhi visited Ladakh to honor his father's memory and understand the struggles and dreams of every Indian.
