In the last few days, motorcycle-borne gunmen have killed at least 200 people in Nigeria's northwestern Zamfara state. Armed gangs on motorcycles have been attacking several villages. The gangs, known as bandits in the area, are said to be sophisticated criminal networks.

They operate over large areas and are involved in stealing animals, kidnapping for ransom, and killing people. This week, the Nigerian government designated these bandits as terrorists.

Security personnel have been given permission by the government to apply harsher sanctions on these organisations and their supporters. Over 100 individuals were slain by suspected bandits. According to residents, the bandits set fire to their homes and disfigured the bodies of the deceased.

More than 200 victims were allegedly buried, and more than 10,000 people were left homeless, according to a spokeswoman for Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq. She went on to say that a large number of people are still missing.
