Abuja, Nigeria: The Catholic community in Nigeria has been struck by another tragic loss as Father Tobias Chukwujekwu Okonkwo, a priest and pharmacist, was shot and killed on December 26. The incident occurred during the liturgical feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, marking a somber moment for the faithful in the Diocese of Ihiala, southeastern Nigeria.

Father Tobias was ambushed by unknown assailants while driving along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Despite his dedication to public health and service, the attackers fatally shot him multiple times, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Dedicated Life of Service

The diocese released a statement highlighting Father Tobias’s contributions to public health. As a pharmacist, he played a key role in managing several health facilities, including nursing and midwifery schools and a medical laboratory at the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala. His work extended beyond spiritual guidance, making him a beacon of hope for many in the community.

The statement also called on the faithful to offer prayers and attend Masses for Father Tobias’s soul, as investigations into the motive behind his murder continue. Local authorities are actively pursuing leads to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Alarming Trend of Violence Against Christians

This tragedy adds to the grim statistics reported in Fides' annual report on missionaries and pastoral workers killed in 2024. With Father Tobias’s death, the total number of pastoral workers and missionaries killed globally in the last year has risen to 14, including nine priests.

The African continent alone witnessed the murder of seven missionaries in 2024, spanning countries like Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, and Nigeria. Such incidents highlight the growing risks faced by Christian communities and clergy in regions plagued by religious extremism and violence.

Challenges Facing Nigerian Christians

Nigeria, home to Africa's largest Christian population according to Pew Research Center, remains a hotspot for anti-Christian violence. The southern and central regions, where Christians are predominantly concentrated, have seen a rise in attacks fueled by growing numbers of Islamic extremists. Murders and violence against Christians have become alarmingly frequent, casting a shadow over religious harmony in the region.

As the Catholic community grieves yet another loss, Father Tobias’s life stands as a testament to unwavering faith and service in the face of adversity. His tragic death underscores the urgent need for greater efforts to protect religious leaders and communities from escalating violence.
