Nirmala Sitharaman to attend finance ministers meeting of G-20 countries to be held in Japan

New Delhi: newly appointed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will attend the meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors of the G-20 countries in Japan. The finance minister will also meet his counterparts from other countries during the meeting to be held in Fukuoka on June 8 and 9.

This will be the first foreign tour after the defence minister, Nirmala, tpok the charge of  the new ministry. She will also be accompanied by the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Shashi Kant Das, on the visit. According to finance ministry officials, the focus of the meeting will be on the threats and challenges facing the global economy. Also, infrastructure investment and the international tax structure will remain the key points of discussion. The meeting will also discuss the issue of global growth and impact on trade from rising protectionism.


Let's tell you for information that the International Monetary Fund has raised the possibility of cutting the global growth rate for 2019. The IMF estimates that the growth rate of 3.6 per cent last year will be 3.3 per cent this year. In view of this projection during the meeting, challenges such as global economic risk surveillance, global imbalances, growing population of the elderly and its policy impact will also be discussed.
