New Delhi: Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog has supported setting minimum prices for mobile data and calls. Kant has said that there is no other way left for the debt-ridden telecom sector. Currently, telecom companies are free to determine the prices of calls and data, but due to competition, these companies have asked the regulatory authority to intervene.
Mobile users in the country are using 4G data as Rs 3.5 per GB. Now telecom companies are demanding to increase this minimum price. If the telecom companies are accepted, then the price of mobile internet will increase by 5 to 10 times. Debt-ridden Vodafone-Idea has recommended a minimum data price of Rs 35 per GB. Airtel is advocating this price to be Rs 30 per GB and Reliance Jio to make it Rs 20 per GB.
Right now, the current rate of Vodafone-Idea and Airtel data is Rs 4 per GB and Reliance Jio's current rate is Rs 3.90 per GB. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently discussing this matter with all the parties. However, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has termed the setting of the minimum price a retrograde step. CCI says that doing so will adversely affect the market.
