Patna: Bihar's Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, recently made a statement that has ignited fresh political discussions within the state. During a media appearance alongside his Deputy Chief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav, Nitish Kumar affectionately placed his arm around Tejashwi's shoulder and remarked, "Now, this kid means everything to me." This comment has prompted speculation in political circles about whether the leader of the Janata Dal (United) was implying a succession plan in favor of Tejashwi, who is the son of Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Nitish Kumar's statement comes on the heels of his reference to "personal friendship" with BJP leaders, a comment that raised eyebrows. It's important to note that after parting ways with the BJP and forming the Grand Alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nitish Kumar had previously named Tejashwi as his successor on multiple occasions. He had explicitly stated that the young RJD leader would "lead" the ruling Grand Alliance in the state during Bihar's assembly elections in 2025.
During a public event on Thursday, Nitish mentioned this "personal friendship" with Radha Mohan Singh, a seasoned BJP leader who had served in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first cabinet. This fueled speculation that Nitish was attempting to mend relations with the BJP and exert pressure on his current allies, the RJD and Congress. However, Nitish Kumar refuted these speculations on Saturday. While holding Tejashwi's hand, he affirmed, "We are working together for the progress of Bihar."
The JD(U) leader also expressed his dismay at how his speech had been portrayed in the media. When asked about the upcoming assembly elections in five states and the performance of the INDIA bloc, he responded, "The people's will is supreme. My primary focus is working for Bihar and supporting initiatives that benefit the entire country."
