Seoul: During an on-site inspection, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for the strengthening of the country's "strategic military muscle both in quality and quantity.""Through the final test-fire, the hypersonic glide vehicle's exceptional manoeuvrability was more strikingly validated," the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. "The test-fire was intended to verify the overall technical parameters of the designed hypersonic weapon system," according to the press release.

With regard to Tuesday's launch, the hypersonic glide vehicle performed "glide jump flight," "corkscrew manoeuvring," and reached "the predetermined target in waters 1,000 kilometres away," it added. It was the third known test-firing of what the North claims is a hypersonic missile, with the first one taking place last week.

Kim was present throughout the firing, which Pyongyang refers to as "field guidance." In March 2020, he oversaw another significant missile test. Kim Yo-jong, Kim's powerful sister, was seen accompanying him in a photo posted by the country's strictly controlled official media.

The North's new bluster comes as nuclear talks between the US and Pyongyang have stalled since the no-deal Hanoi summit in February 2019.
