Noted economist Dr Jayanta Madhab passes away at 90

Dispur: Dr Jayanta Madhab, Renowned economist from Assam passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Monday midnight.  The founder CMD of the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) was 91. The mortal remains of Dr Madhab have been taken to his residence at Kharghuli in Guwahati.

He was admitted on October 17 to Apollo Hospital, where he passed away last night. He died at Apollo Hospital in the city. On October 5, he was admitted to GNRC Hospital. He will be cremated with full state honour. Assam chief secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna has been asked to attend the event on behalf of the state government by CM of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal.

He graduated from JB College in Jorhat with honours in economics and did his MA from Gauhati University.  He earned his doctorate degree in financial management from London School of Economics.. Dr Madhav was instrumental in conceiving NEDFi. In fact, he was handpicked by the then Union finance minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who was also his classmate, to lead the Guwahati-based development bank. He worked as the financial adviser to the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Corporation. He served as a director at the Asian Development Bank (ADB).He served as the economic advisor to the Assam government from 2003-2009 during the tenure of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi. He also played a significant role in the field of skill development in Assam.
