New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has removed lessons on democracy and diversity, political parties and challenges of democracy from Class 10 textbooks. This chapter was included in the Class 10 social science textbook 'Democratic Politics'. Along with this, NCERT has also changed the syllabus of many subjects.

According to the report, the NCERT's move comes after a period of rationalisation of the syllabus during the coronavirus pandemic. At that time these chapters were temporarily excluded from the syllabus and now they have been permanently removed. The other subjects for class 10 for which the syllabus has been changed include Hindi language, Sanskrit, English, Urdu, mathematics, science, social science. Scientists and teachers have expressed concern over the long-term consequences of removing important chapters from the Class 10 syllabus.

In April, the government body had also decided to remove Charles Darwin's theory of evolution from class 9 and class 10 science textbooks. Along with this, the periodic table of chemistry has also been removed. Science is taught as a compulsory subject up to Class 10 in the country. However, now only those students who choose Chemistry in 11th and 12th will study about the periodic table.
