New Delhi: Assembly elections are proposed in 5 states of the country. Earlier, the Election Commission has raised the expenditure limit for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. So now the MLA stake drawn will be able to spend between Rs 28 lakh and Rs 40 lakh in the elections as per his statehood. Earlier, the limit was fixed from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 28 lakh. Indeed, the country has two-tier spending limits in small and large states and Union Territories.

It may be recalled that sub-groups with an expenditure limit of up to Rs 28 lakh include Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Puducherry. Earlier there was a spending limit of up to Rs 20 lakh. While the expenditure limit for the remaining state assembly elections was now up to Rs 28 lakh, which will now be Rs 40 lakh. In the Lok Sabha elections, the expenditure limit for MP candidates for Arunachal, Goa, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar, Chandigarh, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Daman Diu, Lakshadweep, Puducherry and Ladakh has been increased from Rs 54 lakh to Rs 75 lakh. On the other hand, the same expenditure limit for other States and Union Territories has been increased from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 95 lakh.

The expenditure limit of Rs 54 lakh and Rs 70 lakh for urban and rural areas fixed in 2014 for Lok sabha elections has now been increased to Rs 75 lakh and Rs 95 lakh respectively. The Commission had constituted a committee of retired IRS officer Harish Kumar, secretary-general of the commission Umesh Sinha and senior deputy commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kumar in 2020. The committee spoke to all political parties, chief electoral officers in states and other stakeholders, including observers, as well as public opinion.
