Abu Dhabi: Women in Saudi Arabia can now travel abroad without the permission of the Male Guardian. The Saudi government on Friday announced new rules. According to the new rules, women above 21 years of age can apply for a passport without the permission of the Mail Guardian. All adult citizens will now have the freedom to go abroad and passport.

According to the Royal Decree, women will also have the right to register for childbirth, marriage or divorce. At the same time, all citizens will have the right to work without facing any form of gender bias. Yet women in Saudi had to seek permission from the male Guardian. The Mail Guardian included husband, father or male relative. Because of this, women depended entirely on men for many of their important decisions.

This new move of the Saudi regime may lead to seeing major changes in women's lives. Human rights organizations around the world have long been saying that the arrangement of the Mail Guardian in Saudi makes women a second-class citizen. The reformist move by the Saudi regime has now been openly welcomed by local women.
