New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to give a big relief to the students pursuing higher education. According to this, students will now have the option to enter and exit multiple courses from all higher education institutes like management, education, law and engineering colleges in the country and back to the same course at their convenience. That is, students will be able to enrol multiple times in a course. UGC has issued necessary guidelines for multiple mode studies.

New guidelines have been issued by the UGC on the basis of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, in which it was already said that under this new education policy, students will not only get the opportunity to do more than one course but both the courses. Certificates will also be valid. Orientation and counselling will be arranged for the students in each institute. The UGC, in its guidelines, has directed all the state governments and universities to prepare their own rules and policies to implement the new regulation. Institutions will be able to implement it from the new academic year 2022-23 only.

According to this guideline, students will be able to study in different modes according to their convenience. According to the UGC, students can either attend a face-to-face classroom or physical classes in the semester or take online courses or do distance or open courses. The student will have the option to choose any one of the three modes in different semesters. UGC President Prof M Jagadesh Kumar said that I am happy to present the guidelines for conversion of Higher Education Institutes into Multi-disciplinary Institutes. It is expected that by converting these higher education institutes into multi-disciplinary institutes, this guideline will help the universities of the state.

According to the information, UGC has constituted a committee under the leadership of Prof. RP Tiwari to enable the higher education institutes to be converted into multidisciplinary institutions. The committee has suggested several measures such as collaboration, merging and clustering among institutions to achieve the characteristics of a multidisciplinary institution. The UGC says that in view of the disciplinary boundaries in higher education institutions, guidelines have been prepared for transforming higher education institutions into multi-disciplinary institutions.

There will be an Academic Bank of Credit to keep complete details of the students' studies, in which the details of the subjects studied by the students in the last 7 years and the marks obtained in their examinations will be there. During this time students will have the opportunity to study, drop out and then complete the course. That is, a student will be given a certificate after completing one year of studies, a diploma after completing two years, a degree after three years and honours or dual degree after completing four years. The details of all these qualifications will continue to be stored in the academic bank of credit of the student. 

If a student wants to change course after completing one or two or three years in a course, then his marks will be credited in the new course. Provided that the subjects of both the courses are the same. From this you can understand that in the first course there was an English paper and even after changing the course, one of the subjects is English, then there is no need to give English paper again to the student. The marks of both the course subjects will be credited to the academic account.

According to the new guidelines, there will be three types of institutions in the country in which-

1 Research University
2 Teaching University
3 Autonomous College

At the same time, if an institution has more than three thousand students, then that institution will get the status of multi-disciplinary autonomous college. If the number of students is less than three thousand, they will be able to contract with other colleges.
