DIMAPUR: Prior to the Nagaland  Assembly elections, the Nagaland People's Action Committee (NPAC) has called for a 6-hour bandh on January 14, Saturday to demand a resolution to the Naga Political Issue (NPI).

The bandh has been declared statewide during the hours of 6 am. to noon, and it falls on the same day that a delegation from the Election Commission of India (ECI) is visiting the State to assess its readiness for the upcoming elections for the 60-member Assembly. To push for an immediate resolution to NPI, NPAC was established in June of last year.

NPAC convenor Theja Therieh announced on Thursday that the organisation would observe the bandh to show its displeasure and to let the ECI delegation know that Nagas want the problem resolved before elections are held. Friday and Saturday will see the ECI team in the State.

"Are 26-years of negotiation not sufficient? Nobody should be taken for a ride under the garb of talks. Nagas are seriously waiting for a solution to the issue," he said.  Therieh appealed to people to cooperate with the committee and observe the bandh.

He asserted that civil society organisations and tribal governments support NPAC in its efforts to push for an early resolution to the NPI. The current Nagaland government's tenure ends on March 4.
