Now, transgenders to be recruited in police, Odisha govt. announces

In a major announcement amid the Corona crisis, the Odisha government has decided to recruit transgenders in the police service department. This is said to be one of the historic decisions. The state government has approved the transgender community to apply for the posts of Constable and Sub-Inspector in the State Police Department. Director General of Police (DGP) Abhay confirmed this.

Odisha Police has issued a notification inviting applications for recruitment of sub-inspector and constable posts and making transgenders eligible to apply for these posts. The Police Recruitment Board has invited online applications from men, women and transgender community for appointment of 477 Sub-Inspectors and 244 Constables (Communications). The application website will be open from June 22 to July 15.

All Odisha Transgender Welfare Association President Meera Parida welcomed the decision. She said, 'We thank the CM and the Home Department for taking this decision towards gender equality and development of the transgender community'. Further she added, 'The state government's decision will not only boost their confidence but also change the society's perception of transgender people. The candidate applying for the post of Sub Inspector should have a bachelor's degree in any subject and the candidates applying for the post of Constable are required to pass the (12th) examination'.
