New Delhi: Over the weekend, the number of cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant in India increased to 21, prompting officials to urge people to be vaccinated. The western state of Rajasthan had the most Omicron cases, with nine, followed by Maharashtra with eight, Karnataka with two, and Gujarat and New Delhi with one apiece.

On Twitter, Delhi's health minister, Satyendar Jain, said, "The people of Delhi must get completely vaccinated, wear a mask, and maintain social distance." The city's first Omicron patient was being treated at a state-run facility, he said adding that  94 percent of the adults had got at least one dose.

In total, 51 percent of the country's 944 million adults have been fully vaccinated, with 85 percent receiving at least one shot. Despite sufficient vaccine supplies, tens of millions of individuals are overdue for their second shot, according to government data. On Thursday, India's first two Omicron cases were announced in the southern state of Karnataka, one of whom had no recent travel history.

The majority of the other cases have been in persons who have recently returned from abroad, but doctors say the altered virus is spreading locally as well. On Twitter, surgeon Arvinder Singh Soin, who has been treating COVID-19 patients, said, "Omicron is here, community spread is underway." "Put on your mask. Vaccinate yourself completely."
