According to European Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides, almost one in every five European Union (EU) citizens (20%) has had a booster shot against Covid-19.

'Booster shots were given to one in every five European citizens. Kyriakides claimed in a radio interview on Monday that the ratio is currently at 19%. A third dosage, according to medical specialists, is required to increase the protection of elderly persons and those with chronic medical issues like diabetes against Covid-19.

In order to deal with the new wave of pandemic induced by the novel Omicron form, Kyriakides emphasised that strong collaboration among EU member states is required.  She warned that the situation ahead would be "difficult." "I can't predict how things will turn out," she added, "but I expect the Omicron mutation, which is far more infectious, will exacerbate the difficulties." To avoid the spread of infection, Kyriakides advised EU citizens to be vaccinated and to strictly adhere to personal protective measures.
