Bhopal literature festival has been canceled a session recently by the much-admired filmmaker Onir Dhar titled ‘Making Literature LGBTQ Neutral’ at the Bharat Bhavan on the opening day of the festival on Friday.

He tweeted the same by saying, “Shocked and Sad that an event I was really looking forward to speaking at had to drop me. Apparently, there was a group threatening protest and violence, and the police told the organizers that they cannot guarantee my safety. So they canceled the event. Let me process this".

The event was canceled because a group of people as allegedly threaten to protest his presence there. Onir said that he got to know about the cancellation of the event a few hours before his flight to Bhopal, saying “the organizers didn’t even have the guts to call me, on Thursday morning I got a text from the travel agency that my ticket has been canceled. When I had called the organizer to know what happened, I was told that they were planning to text me. It was very unprofessional as they were forced to drop me, but I’m not someone to stay quiet, I will raise my voice against injustice”.

He reacted to the cancellation of his session stating that if the issue was the topic then why my session is called off? I was informed that the police cannot guarantee my safety.

Onir Dhar is one of the most-heard gay rights voices in India and Abroad and a film director best known for his film “My Brother…Nikhil”, which deals with AIDS and same-sex relationships.

He further said that “I don’t think India’s mainstream cinema is ready yet. They are yet to figure out what these things are about. I mean, do you really need a script consultant to make a film about a gay character? It is ironic when people tell me, 'Onir, how can we understand the LGBT community?' I did not attend a workshop to discover my identity and myself. It is simple, be empathetic and kind, and you will understand everything”.

He appealed to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's government should organize an event where he can talk about queer crafts and literature to indicate that he was not against the LGBTQ community and state government did not support anonymous violent protesters.
