SPAIN: Defending champion Ons Jabeur is not able to defend her Madrid Open title this year since she has withdrawn from Women's Tennis Association 1000 event due to injury. The World No.4 from Tunisia withdrew from the tournament today due to left calf injury. Jabeur reached the 4 four of last week's Stuttgart Open, but she retired from her semifinal match against World No.1 Iga Swiatek with a sprained left calf while trailing 3-0.
Jabeur, a two-time Grand Slam finalist, posted on social media that tests revealed a "small tear in my calf" and that further recovery time will be required. I regret to inform you that I will be unable to compete and retain my title in Madrid this year. Before quitting, Jabeur was the fourth seed in the Madrid main draw. Jabeur will be replaced as the No. 33 seed in the draw by Shelby Rogers of the United States, who was once the highest-ranked unseeded player. Rogers' prior position in the draw will be filled by a qualifier or lucky loser.
Jabeur has suffered two injuries so far this year. Jabeur missed the entire Middle East swing in February due to minor knee surgery she underwent following the Australian Open this year. Jabeur returned for the Sunshine Double, and on clay she seemed to be back to her best. Early in April, she won her fourth WTA singles match on dirt in Charleston. She then defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia and Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart before quitting in the quarterfinals.
After success on red clay, including a title in Madrid, she entered the French Open last year as one of the tournament favourites, but she was eliminated in the first round.
