Kochi: Amid a spike in Covid-19 cases in the southern state of Kerala, Opposition leader VD Satheesan on Monday lashed out at the Pinarayi Vijayan-led state government for its Covid response. He accused the state government of not taking any steps to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the southern state.

Speaking to the media in the state's Malappuram district, he said, "Covid (Covid-19 virus) is spreading in the state. The (Kerala) government, till now, has not given any clarity on the spread of the virus." He further stated that at the national level, the Ministry of Health reports that out of more than 1,800 cases in the country, over 1,600 cases have been reported in Kerala.

"There were four deaths (till now). There were 119 new cases yesterday. One death was also reported yesterday. Why is the government not saying anything about it? What steps have they taken? Around 89 per cent of the new variant of Omicron reported in the country are from Kerala," he added while questioning the Covid response of the Kerala government. "Even Tamil Nadu has started taking measures. Our government is not doing anything. The government has not specified what action it has taken. Since Nava Kerala Sadass is going on, they are waiting for it to get over," Satheesan added in his remarks.

Nava Kerala Sadass is a tour taken out by CM Vijayan and his cabinet colleagues through all 140 assembly constituencies in the state. "The government should take immediate action before people start panicking about the spread of the virus," he said. India on Sunday logged 335 new Covid-19 infections while the number of active cases increased to 1,828, according to the Union Health Ministry. One death was also recorded in Kerala, where the Covid sub-variant JN.1 was detected recently.
