Yesterday, a few hours after the lower court was ordered to consider the interim bail request, the apex court amended it at the request of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. A bench of Justices R Bhanumathi and Justice AS Bopanna said that the matter will now be heard on Tuesday instead of Thursday on the request of the Solicitor General.

In the apex court yesterday, there was a lot of arguments by former finance minister P Chidambaram to get relief, in response, there was strong opposition from the CBI as well. However, after a debate on both sides, Chidambaram got partial relief from the Supreme Court when the court said that he would not be sent to Tihar Jail in this case for the time being.

The Supreme Court told the lower court at around 1.40 pm earlier that Chidambaram's request for interim bail is considered today and if he is not granted relief, his CBI custody will be extended for three days. However, hours after passing this order, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta mentioned the matter at around three o'clock and said that there would be jurisdiction issues in implementing the order passed earlier.

Chidambaram has been on CBI remand since his arrest on 21 August. At the end of the three-day remand, CBI presented him in the court of Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar on Monday. After hearing arguments, the court extended the remand by one day and fixed the hearing for Tuesday afternoon. Significantly, there are allegations of financial mess during Chidambaram's UPA tenure.
