Mumbai: Many heart-wrenching cases keep coming to the fore from all over the country, meanwhile an incident of cruelty to a similar animal has come to the fore from the Kapaswadi area of Andheri (West) of Mumbai. On the night of 25 December 2021, an unknown miscreant cut the penis of a dog. The blood-soaked dog was taken to the Bombay SPCA Animal Hospital in Parel. An emergency operation was performed to save the dog's life.

Dr Nandini Kulkarni, an animal officer appointed by the Bombay High Court to oversee animal welfare laws in Maharashtra, said, “It is very shocking and unfortunate that a young street dog's penis has been cut off by someone. This probably happened while he was having sex in this area. I have asked the senior officers of Mumbai Police and the State Livestock Department to investigate the matter further.”

In the same incident, Dr Shailesh Pethe, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Animal Husbandry and Member Secretary, Mumbai District SPCA has formally written to the DN Nagar Police to file a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. On the other hand, Honorary District Animal Welfare Officer of Animal Welfare Board of India Mitesh Jain has checked the footage CCTV in the case and asked them to collect evidence. Meanwhile, animal rights activists have written to Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray requesting him to order an inquiry into the incident. This is not the first case of inhumanity with dogs in Mumbai. Earlier, a case of cruelty to an 8-year-old female dog named 'Noori' was reported at the Galleria Shopping Complex in Powai, Mumbai. The criminals had put 11 inches of wood in its genitals. Similarly, Taufiq Ahmed had committed the rape of a bitch in Santa Cruz Kalina. The female dog was raped by a man named Ahmed Shah at Juhu in Andheri West.
