Rain wreaks havoc in Pakistan, 161 killed

Islamabad: 161 people have been killed and 137 others injured in heavy rains since July In Pakistan. An official of Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority confirmed the figures. Saqib Mumtaz, media head of the Disaster Management Authority, told media on Sunday that the current spell of rain is expected to subside from Karachi on Monday.

At least 11 people were killed and dozens others injured in rain-related incidents in Karachi of Pakistan's south Sindh province, local media reported on Sunday. According to local Sama TV, heavy rains at a speed of 192 mm per hour flooded the lower reaches of the city and main roads, trapping people in their homes and severely disrupting road and rail transport.

The report says that most of the fatalities have occurred due to roof collapse and current accidents, which have claimed the lives of dozens of animals that people had bought for sacrifice on goats. Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah said in a press conference that many people have been displaced by the rains and they have provided temporary tents where they are being provided with food, beds and medicines.
