Pakistan; Two devastating bus accidents have claimed the lives of at least 36 people, in Pakistan, reports. The first accident took place on the Makran Coastal Highway in the Balochistan province, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals. The second occurred when a bus tragically fell into a deep ravine near the Pakistan-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), leaving 24 people dead.
The initial incident happened during the night as a bus carrying Shia pilgrims returning from Iran veered off the road. The provincial government reported that 32 others were injured in the crash, with many in critical condition. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with four people still trapped inside the wreckage. Emergency responders utilized a crane to assist in the evacuation.
The second accident occurred in the Kahuta district of eastern Punjab province. Initially, police reported seven injuries; however, medical professionals later confirmed that all passengers aboard the bus had perished. According to a rescue official, the accident was attributed to brake failure.
Pakistan’s President and Prime Minister expressed their condolences to the grieving families in separate statements. The country’s Interior Minister also extended his heartfelt sympathy to those affected.
Road accidents are a common occurrence in Pakistan, often due to poor infrastructure, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and reckless driving. Each year, the country sees around 9,000 road incidents, resulting in over 5,000 fatalities.
Just days before these tragic events, another bus carrying Pakistani pilgrims in Iran flipped over, leading to the deaths of 28 people and injuring 23 more. These pilgrims were en route to Iraq for the Arbaeen commemoration, a significant event for Shia Muslims worldwide. The bodies of the victims were repatriated to Pakistan and buried in the Sindh province.
