Srinagar: Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a separatist leader of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and former president of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), passed away on Wednesday. He was 92 years old. Geelani was handed over to him under tight security at 5 am on Thursday. Geelani had been suffering from kidney disease for the past 20 years. He also had some other health-related problems. Many people, including Pakistan PM Maran Khan, have expressed grief over Geelani's death. Geelani's slogan of 'Hum Pakistani and Pakistan Hamara' is also being remembered a lot in Pakistan.

Imran Khan said he was deeply saddened to hear of Geelani's death. Imran Khan wrote that Geelani fought for the rights of his people and Kashmiris throughout his life. He maintained his resolve even after suffering many tortures. Pakistan will celebrate a day of mourning on his death and the Pakistan flag will remain half-bowed. Pakistan's President Dr Arif Alvi awarded Geelani Pakistan's highest civilian honour, Nishan-e-Pakistan, last year. Geelani was given the honour for his fight for the self-determination of Kashmiris.

Pakistan's National Security Advisor (NSA) Moid Yusuf wrote that the news of Geelani's death is sad. He devoted his life to the freedom of Kashmir and Kashmiris. He was a hero for both Pakistanis and Kashmiris. May Allah give peace to their souls. Yusuf wrote in another tweet, 'We heard that the Indian Army was pressurising Geelani Saheb's family to bury the body at night. We have also heard that restrictions have been imposed in Kashmir. I demand that India allow Geelani saheb's funeral to take place as per Islamic customs. I warn India not to play with fire. Kashmiris will counter such cowardly acts.'
