NEW DELHI: In its latest report, published on February 10 in Parliament, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) expressed worry over the escalating incidence of cyber crimes in the country.

According to the Committee, which is chaired by Congressman Anand Sharma, cyber crime cases have surged from 27,248 in 2018 to 50,035 in 2020, primarily involving financial transactions, according to data from the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB).

"Not only do the criminals target the innocent and defenceless, notably the elderly, and defraud them of their savings, but they also target well-known people and celebrities," the panel stated, adding that specialised training was needed to deal with the country's growing cybercrime problem.

6The Committee also recommended that the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) and the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) work together with state training academies to provide police officers with the necessary knowledge of cyber laws, cyber crime investigation, and digital forensics, as well as to update them on new technological tools to combat cyber crimes on a regular basis. Cyber experts as educators on cyber technologies may be recommended to training academies.
