New Delhi: Women in the country will now have the legal right to have abortions for up to 24 weeks as per their requirements. The "Medical Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Bill 2020" was passed in the upper house on Tuesday. On Friday, the Lok Sabha also approved the bill with amendments suggested by the Rajya Sabha.

The government had earlier passed it in the Lok Sabha, but the Rajya Sabha had suggested some amendments with which the Lok Sabha gave its green signal today. It will then be possible for any woman in the country to have an abortion for 24 weeks if required. Now its upper limit is 20 weeks. The new law has added a 'special category' under which rape victims, disabled, family rape victims, and minors will have the right to allow any woman and her partner to have abortions.

It is often seen that after the 20th week of pregnancy, there are many unwanted situations. It is not safe to have an abortion. Abortions are still allowed in many countries of the world after 20 weeks so that doctors can make appropriate decisions by getting full information about unwanted conditions arising during pregnancy.
