NEW DELHI: As the Winter Session of Parliament enters its tenth day, several crucial agendas are set to take precedence. Among the key highlights anticipated for discussion are the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, the Repealing and Amending Bill, and the presentation of three pivotal reports by the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees focusing on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports.

Rajya Sabha Agenda:
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is scheduled to present the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023 for consideration and passage in the Rajya Sabha today. Alongside this, Rajya Sabha MPs Vivek Thakur, Sangeeta Yadav, and Faitaz Ahmad will deliver three crucial reports from the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports.

Additionally, Union Minister Smriti Irani is expected to address the Rajya Sabha, providing an update on the implementation status of the 350th Report of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports.

Furthermore, the Thirty-Fifth Report of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution will be presented during today's session.

Moreover, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will table the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha. This legislation aims to repeal specific enactments and modify an existing enactment.

Recent Developments: On December 12, the Rajya Sabha passed a bill regulating the appointment and service terms of Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners. This bill incorporates significant amendments, such as maintaining their status equivalent to Supreme Court judges, enhancing the search committee, and introducing a new clause to safeguard them from court cases while carrying out their official duties. Despite passing through a voice vote, members of the opposition voiced concerns, alleging that the proposed measure undermines the autonomy of the poll authority by aligning it too closely with the Executive, thereby potentially violating constitutional norms.
