The situation was similar to the party in 1998-1999, as was the situation with regard to the post of Congress president. Ever since the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, many Congress leaders wanted to bring Sonia Gandhi into active politics, though she avoided it for years and in 1997 she was a primary member of the party in Kolkata. Narasimha Rao and Sitaram Kesari were elected to the post of Congress President only after Rajiv's death. However, they also had to face opposition in the party. In the midterm elections of 1998, they made Kesri responsible for the party's weak preparations. Also, his decision-making style angered leaders like R Kumar Mangalam and Aslam Sher Khan, who left the Congress. On 14 March 1998, Gandhi was elected as the Congress President. The biggest challenge for him was to unite the party.
