The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) revealed on Friday that passenger car wholesales in December 2021 were 219,421 units, down 13% from 252,998 units in the same month in 2020. In December 2021, the two-wheeler category reported 1,006,062 units of wholesales, down 11% from the same month the previous year when it recorded 1,127,917 units.

According to SIAM, passenger car sales totaled 761,124 units in the October–December period of last year, while two-wheeler sales totaled 35,98,299 units in the October–December period of 2021.

According to SIAM data, passenger car sales were 21,48,838 units from April to December 2021, while two-wheeler sales were 1,01,15,915 units in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. Kenichi Ayukawa, President, SIAM, commented on the third quarter of the current fiscal year, saying that, despite the escalating virus spread, the Indian vehicle sector is taking all essential safeguards in accordance with government rules.

Industry, like in the past, continues to work with the government to help the country in any way it can. "Sales in the third quarter, particularly those over the holiday season, fell short of forecasts. All portions are still several years behind. He said, "The industry is working hard to maximise output and reduce the effect of supply shortages while protecting the safety of employees along the value chain."

SIAM also feels that the implementation of several PLI schemes for industries including car and auto components, advanced chemical cells, and semi-conductor production will benefit the Indian auto industry in the long run.

Commenting on the third-quarter sales performance of the Indian auto industry, Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM said that the demand of passenger vehicle segment was largely affected due to supply constraints while the two-wheeler segment was majorly impacted due to subdued demand.

he also pointed that sales of passenger vehicles were the lowest in five years, while for the two-wheelers it has been the lowest in nine years.
