New Delhi: The Supreme Court today, hearing the Pegasus espionage case, has banned the action of a commission headed by Justice Madan B Lokur, set up by the West Bengal government to investigate. At the same time, Chief Justice NV Ramana asked advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi to explain how the commission was constituted by the state-initiated action.

Supreme Court has also issued a notice to the West Bengal government and sought a response within 4 ha. The Supreme Court today issued notices to the West Bengal government and the commission banning the action of a commission headed by Justice Madan B Lokur, set up by the West Bengal government to probe the Pegasus case.

A bench headed by NV Ramanna, the same CJI, asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the state government, to explain how the commission constituted by the state started the proceedings. In reply, Singhvi said, 'I had assured that the Commission would not work till your decision. But the commission started work after the verdict in the case.' Then, the Supreme Court banned the commission's action. The Supreme Court was hearing today a petition challenging the constitution of a commission of inquiry by the West Bengal government to probe the pegasus espionage charges. The advocate appearing for the petitioner NGO had referred the matter to a bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramanna yesterday. The advocate told the bench that the commission is pursuing the investigation despite the fact that the apex court has constituted an expert committee in the case. He said the state government has assured the apex court that it will not proceed with the investigation. The advocate appearing for NGO Global Village Foundation Charitable Trust requested an immediate hearing in the case.
