London: London Mayor Sadiq Khan has strongly condemned the plan to carry out an anti-India march on Kashmir issue on the occasion of Diwali next Sunday. In addition, Sajid Khan of Pakistani origin has said that this will deepen the division in the UK capital. He has appealed to the organizers and potential protesters to cancel the protest march.
According to the London Metropolitan Police, permission has been sought for this proposed march and it is estimated that 5,000 to 10,000 protesters will be involved. There are plans to march from Richmond Terrace to the High Commission of India near Downing Street, housing the British PM. In response to a letter from Naveen Shah, a member of the London Assembly and of Indian origin, Khan has said, "I strongly condemn the plan to take out a protest march to the Indian High Commission on the auspicious occasion of Diwali."
Khan, in his letter written on 18 October, said, 'This march will only increase divisions among the people at a time when all Londoners need to unite. Therefore, I appeal to the organizers of the march and those considering to join it to be repealed. He said that his office plans to collaborate with Scotland Yard (London Metropolitan Police) to ensure surveillance during March.
