Kolkata: The people of Gangasagar have demanded from PM Narendra Modi that the way he promoted Lakshadweep in the past, he should also talk about Sagardweep in the same way. Local people are confident that if Prime Minister Modi mentions Sagardweep, the whole world will pay attention to it. This is going to open the way for development here. Let us tell you that another name of Gangasagar is Sagardweep. Saheli Tala, resident of Rudranagar area, said that Prime Minister Modi is a very influential personality. He has crores of followers in the country and the world. After the video of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep surfaced, tourism there has increased rapidly. People have forgotten to go to Maldives. If they talk about Sagardweep, this area and its people will be greatly benefited.

Not enough development work in Gangasagar: Saheli, who is studying electrical engineering from Swami Vivekananda University located in Sagar region of Madhya Pradesh, has further said that despite being an important pilgrimage center of the country, there are no industries in Gangasagar. There is also a huge shortage of employment. There are no good educational institutions. The health system is not advanced. Local youth have to turn to other states for work. Only at the time of Gangasagar Fair on Makar Sankranti, so much pomp and show is seen here and a crowd of lakhs of pilgrims is seen gathering. The rest of the time only a few tourists come. There are not even good hotels here for them to stay.

Also pay attention to Gangasagar: Local shopkeeper Balram Das has said that PM Modi has done a lot for the promotion of Sanatan Dharma. Gangasagar is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus, hence they should pay special attention to it. Gopinath Das, a resident of Laxmi Bazar area, says that one of the main reasons for Sagardweep not being developed adequately is its lack of land connectivity with the mainland. Even after decades, a bridge has not been constructed across the Muri Ganga river.

Gangasagar, 100 km from Kolkata: Reports say that Sagardweep is a naturally formed island surrounded by water in South 24 Parganas district, about 100 km from Kolkata. It is a part of the world's largest mangrove forest, Sundarban. The population here is a little more than 2 lakhs. The livelihood of Sagardweep is mainly based on agriculture. Most of the people cultivate betel leaves. The betel leaf from here is exported to different parts of the country. Apart from this, paddy and various vegetables are also cultivated. Some people are associated with fisheries. There are no big factories here. Small cottage industries are also running.
