Chennai: The controversy over the Dravidian icon and social reformer Periyar in Tamil Nadu is not ending. The latest case came from a village in Chengalpattu district, where a statue of Periyar was damaged. The police have started investigating the matter as to who did it. South superstar Rajinikanth, who has entered politics, had given a statement in the past that the clothes of Ram-Sita were put up at a rally in Periyar, after which there was a ruckus in the state's politics.

Now the case of damaged the statue of Periyar in a village in Chengalpattu has come to light. According to the information, the local people informed the police about the condition of the statue. The department immediately swung into action and an investigation was being conducted to find out who had done it. Police are investigating CCTV footage of the surroundings. It can be clearly seen in the photographs that the head and hands of the statue have been damaged.
A few days ago, Rajinikanth claimed in an interview to a Tamil magazine that Periyar had taken out a rally in Salem in 1971 which depicted the robes of Lord Ram and Sita. After this, members of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam filed a case against him. He was also subjected to criticism from political parties including DMK, AIDMK. However, Rajni had categorically refused to apologize.
