MANILA: Due to "growing disturbance," authorities in the Philippines upped the alert level for the Taal volcano near Manila on Saturday.
According to the media report, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology elevated the volcano's alert status to 3 on a scale of 5 after it spewed plumes and reported earthquakes at 7.22 a.m.
The volcano in Batangas province, 66 kilometres south of Manila, "produced a brief phreatomagmatic explosion followed by practically constant phreatomagmatic activity that generated plumes 1,500 metres and volcanic earthquakes," according to the institute.
The institute cautioned that "magmatic intrusion" near the main crater "may further accelerate subsequent eruptions." The institute advised the general people to avoid the volcano island. Airplanes were also told not to fly over it. The Taal volcano, one of the Philippines' most active volcanoes, erupted in January 2020, displacing approximately 380,000 people and damaging numerous crops, houses, and roads in the province.
