The World Food Program (WFP) has denounced a three-person attack on a truck carrying humanitarian supplies in South Sudan's Jonglei state.
WFP said in a statement issued in Juba, South Sudan's capital, that armed gunmen attacked a commercial convoy of 44 trucks carrying WFP food assistance between Gadiang and Yuai in Jonglei state, report read.
"This is simply unacceptable," Adeyinka Badejo, the World Food Programme's interim Country Director in South Sudan, stated. This is the third ambush in Jonglei state in the last four months, according to Badejo.
Similar attacks occurred in December 2021 and March 2022, as per the UN humanitarian organisation. "Continued violence and theft simply add to the difficulty of humanitarian work and threaten life-saving food aid destined for vulnerable communities. Further attacks on humanitarian convoys will endanger humanitarian aid, forcing the World Food Programme (WFP) to halt food aid in wider Jonglei until a safe environment for humanitarians is established "South Sudan's Country Director for the World Food Programme (WFP) added.
WFP asked the government to prosecute the perpetrators of the attacks and ensure the safety and security of aid personnel and assets.
