Pixel Watch 3 to Receive Three Years of Software Support, Shorter Than Pixel Phones

Google has announced that the Pixel Watch 3 will receive software updates for three years, matching the support period of the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2. This is a notable difference from the company's seven-year software update promise for its latest smartphones, including the Pixel 8 series and the upcoming Pixel 9 lineup.

The seven-year update commitment for Google’s smartphones—covering models like the Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold—sets a new industry standard. This extensive support is expected to outlast the typical upgrade cycle for most users.

In contrast, the Pixel Watch 3’s three-year software support period highlights a distinct approach to wearables. While the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 also had three years of updates, the Pixel Watch 3 will follow the same pattern. Future updates beyond October 2027 are uncertain.

This difference in support duration underscores a gap in Google's update strategy between its smartphones and smartwatches. The disparity may reflect the company's belief that users upgrade their smartwatches more frequently than their phones. Alternatively, it could be influenced by the lower price of smartwatches compared to smartphones. Either way, Pixel Watch users should expect shorter software support compared to Pixel phone owners.
