According to the initiative to guard the environment against degradation, the Central Railways of the South have arranged machines for crushing and recycling of plastic bottles at several stations in Hyderabad.
The machines have been installed at Kachiguda, Secunderabad and Nizamabad stations and also Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
These crusher machines range approximately to the size of a refrigerator and can manage to crush approximately 5000 bottles per day.
The bottles that have crushed are released as small pieces of plastic which could be sold as scrap and can be reused to manufacture bags or other materials like T-shirt.
As quoted by the ANI, Uma Shankar, the chief public relations officer of the south-central railways asserted, "The aim to install these machines is to protect the environment. If any passenger wants to throw the plastic water bottle they can put into this machine, which will crush the water bottle."
Steps are being undertaken to stop plastic littering and also to discourage the use of plastic.
In the previous month, the government ordered its municipalities to ban the use of plastic as soon as possible.
The guidelines discourage the use of any sort of plastic items such as plastic and tetra bottles, single-use straws, plastic/styrofoam tea cups/containers also plastic below 50 microns or plastic coated items.
