Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan admitted on Tuesday that the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf made 'mistakes' in the first phase of local government elections in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).
Khan took to Twitter and stated: "The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) made errors in the first phase of the KP LG elections and paid the price. A major contributor was the selection of the incorrect candidate. From now on, I will personally oversee the PTI's LG election strategy in the second phase of KP LG elections and LG elections throughout Pakistan. InshaAllah, the PTI will emerge victorious." According to unofficial and unverified results, the ruling PTI was dealt a major blow on Monday when Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) cruised to victory with its candidate grabbing the pivotal post of Peshawar Mayor in the local government elections held in K-P since the merger of the tribal districts.
The ruling party suffered shocking setbacks in most areas, with opposition candidates defeating its nominees. The PTI was defeated by the JUI-F in the election for Mayor of Peshawar.
According to unofficial results, Zubair Ali of the JUI-F won with a margin of around 11,500 votes after receiving 62,388, while Rizwan Bangash of the PTI received 50,669 votes and Zarak Arbab of the PPP received 45,000 votes.
