New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi will address 'Parakram Diwas' celebrations in Kolkata on January 23. He will commemorate the event, 125th birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose, said Union culture minister Prahlad Patel.

Subhas Chandra Bose is remembered as an iconic freedom fighter who hailed from the state. The Prime Minister's Office also said that 'he will also distribute over one lakh land 'pattas' in Sivasagar, Assam on the same day.' The government on January 8 set up a high-level committee led by Union home minister Amit Shah for the 125th birth anniversary celebrations. Modi will visit two states assuming the significance of both as they are headed to assembly polls in April-May. The BJP, as well as the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, have planned a number of events around Bose, often called Netaji by admirers. Patel said, “Different ministries will roll out different programmes throughout the year to celebrate the great freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose." The PMO noted that the central government had recently decided to celebrate Bose's birthday every year as 'Parakram Diwas' to honour and remember his indomitable spirit and selfless service to the nation.

Modi will preside over the inaugural function of the celebrations at Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. Before this event, Modi will also visit the National Library, Kolkata, in remembrance of "legacy of Netaji Subhas in the 21st century" and will interact with the artists and other participants, the PMO said.
