Election officials said Raisi had secured 62 percent of the 90 percent votes counted till Friday night. Thereafter, three other presidential candidates had accepted their defeat. The change of power in Iran comes at a time when discussions are on to restore the nuclear deal with the US and other European countries. On Sunday, the Iranian Interior Ministry announced that The Additional Judiciary Chief Raisi has been elected as the eighth President of Iran.
Polling was extended by 2 hours in the presidential election in Iran on Friday, as the total turnout was estimated to be much less than 50 percent. Many voters found it appropriate not to cast their votes as only 7 candidates were finally separated by retrenching 600 candidates including 40 women in the elections. All the male candidates were there. At the same time, the seven candidates included a former President and a former Parliament Speaker. Mohsin Rezai, Amiruhosain Kazizadeh Hashemi and reformist Abdulnasir Hemati, among the three other strong contenders in the presidential election, had accepted defeat hours after the results and wished Raisi.
