NEW DELHI: Bhim Singh, the founder and senior leader of the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party, died on Tuesday in Jammu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Singh's death.

"He was very well-read and scholarly," he said on Twitter. "Our hearts go out to his family and supporters." Prof Bhim Singh Ji will be remembered as a grassroots leader who dedicated his life to the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He was a voracious reader and scholar. I will never forget my interactions with him. I am saddened by his death. Please accept my condolences to his family and supporters. "Om Shanti," Modi tweeted.

Singh, who was born in August 1941 in the Ramnagar area of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, founded the Panthers Party in 1982 with his wife Jay Mala. He served as party chairman for 30 years, until 2012, when he was succeeded by his nephew Harsh Dev Singh. He returned to active leadership last year after being elected president of the Panthers Party.
