Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the death of former Chief Justice of India Ramesh Chandra Lahoti on Thursday, praising his efforts to the court and providing prompt justice for the poor.
PM Modi took to Twitter to say, "Anguished by the death of former Chief Justice of India RC Lahoti Ji. He will be remembered for his contributions to the judiciary and for emphasising the importance of providing prompt justice to the poor. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti is the Sanskrit word for peace." On Wednesday, Lahoti died in a Delhi hospital.
He was born on November 1, 1940, and enrolled as an Advocate in 1962 after joining the Bar in District Guna in 1960. He was appointed as a District and Sessions Judge in April 1977, after being recruited directly from the Bar to the State Higher Judicial Service. After a year as a District and Sessions Judge, he resigned in May 1978 and returned to the Bar, concentrating his practise at the High Court.
On May 3, 1988, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and on August 4, 1989, he was made a permanent Judge. On February 7, 1994, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court, and on December 9, 1998, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
