Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended warm wishes to Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. In his message, PM Modi highlighted the importance of "sacrifice, compassion, and brotherhood" as essential values for fostering a peaceful world. This greeting comes amid strained relations between India and the Maldives.

The Indian High Commission in Maldives shared the prime minister's message in a press release. "On the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India @NarendraModi extended warm greetings to His Excellency President of Maldives Dr. @MMuizzu, the Government & the people of the Republic of Maldives," the commission posted on X.

In his message, PM Modi emphasized that the values represented by Eid-ul-Adha are crucial for building a peaceful and inclusive world. He also noted that the festival is celebrated with enthusiasm across India, reflecting the country's rich multicultural heritage.

President Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, recently demanded the complete withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, which led to increased tensions. India complied with the request, pulling its troops out before the May 10 deadline. These troops had been stationed in the Maldives to operate and maintain two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft previously gifted by India.

Despite the recent friction, PM Modi's Eid greeting to President Muizzu may signal India's desire to mend ties. As part of its Neighbourhood First policy, India invited Muizzu to PM Modi's swearing-in ceremony, underscoring efforts to strengthen regional relationships.

The Maldives plays a significant role in India's initiatives like 'SAGAR' (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the Neighbourhood First policy. India's commitment to maintaining strong ties with the Maldives is evident in these continued efforts, even amid recent challenges.

During his visit to New Delhi, Union Minister S Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with President Muizzu. Jaishankar expressed optimism about future cooperation between India and the Maldives, stating on X, "Delighted to call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu of Maldives today in New Delhi. Look forward to India and Maldives working together closely."
